Introduction
This procedure explains how to create a volume instance in Edge Infrastructure Services. A volume instance provides storage on a node for an edge application to store its working copy, runtime data, and logs. You create volume instances on a specific node or cluster. There are two volume types:- Image Volume: Downloads an immutable application image from your datastore to the node. Edge applications use this as a read-only base image.
- Block Storage: Provides writable storage for application data. You specify the access mode, maximum size, and optionally initialize the volume from an existing image volume.
Prerequisites
- You have the SysManager or SysAdmin role in your enterprise. See Manage Roles.
- At least one node onboarded to Edge Infrastructure Services. If creating a cluster volume, at least one cluster configured.
- For Image Volume type: at least one app image available in your enterprise.
Navigate to Volumes
- In the sidebar, click Infrastructure > Workloads > Volumes.
- Click the Add button (floating button in the lower right of the page).
- On the volume type selector, choose Image Volume or Block Storage, then click Next to proceed to the creation wizard.
Configure Identity
In the Identity section:- In the Name field, enter a unique identifier for the volume. The name cannot contain spaces and cannot be changed after creation.
- In the Title field, enter a human-readable display label. The title defaults to the name you entered and can be changed later.
- In the Description field, enter an optional description.
- In the Target Type field, select whether this volume will be created on a Node or a Node Cluster.
- In the Node or Node Cluster field, select the target from the dropdown. The volume is created on this node when deployed.
- Click Next.
Configure Storage
Image Volume
In the Storage section for an Image Volume:- In the App Image field, select the application image that will back this volume. The image is downloaded from the datastore associated with it.
- Click Create Volume.
Block Storage
In the Storage section for Block Storage:- In the Access Mode field, select the appropriate access permission:
- Read Only: Applications can read from this volume but cannot write to it.
- Read Write: Applications can read from and write to this volume.
- Multi Read / Single Write: Behaves the same as Read Write. Multiple applications can read; writes are handled as single-writer access.
- In the Max Size field, enter a value and select a unit (B, KB, MB, GB, or TB). This sets the maximum storage space the volume can use on the node.
- In the Image Volume field, optionally select an existing image volume to use as the initial content for this block storage volume. If you leave this field empty, the volume starts blank.
- Use the Encryption toggle to enable encryption at rest. When enabled, EVE-OS (Edge Virtualization Engine) encrypts the volume data on the node.
- Click Create Volume.
Verify the Creation
After creation, Edge Infrastructure Services returns you to the Volumes list. Locate the new volume and confirm its Run State is progressing toward Online. The time to reach the Online state depends on the volume type and the size of any image being downloaded.Next Steps
