EVE-OS can run as a virtual machine on Apple M1 hardware using UTM. This configuration is useful for testing EVE-OS deployments on Apple Silicon development machines. However, Apple Silicon hardware restrictions affect which edge application types you can deploy inside the EVE-OS guest.

Application Type Support

Apple Silicon does not expose the hardware virtualization CPU flag to guest virtual machines. As a result, nested virtualization is not available inside an EVE-OS VM running on an Apple M1 device. When you attempt to deploy a VM edge application to an EVE-OS guest running on Apple M1 hardware, the deployment fails with an error indicating that virtualization is unavailable, similar to the following status alert: failed to run domain <addea123-1234-123aa-...>: not based on an OCI image Container workloads are not affected by this restriction and run normally.

Validated Test Environment

This compatibility behavior was validated in the following environment:
  • macOS Monterey 12.6
  • MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2021) with Apple M1
  • UTM 4.0.7 (66)
  • EVE-OS 8.12.0 ARM64

Next Steps

Add an Edge App Image

Add a container image as a deployable edge application.

Create an EVE-OS Compatible Windows 10 VM (FML Mode)

VM workloads, use a dedicated physical node instead of an EVE-OS guest on Apple M1.
