Introduction
This procedure explains how to create application snapshots, roll back to a previous snapshot, and delete snapshots that are no longer needed. For background on how snapshots work, see Application Snapshot Overview.Prerequisites
- You have the SysManager or SysAdmin role in your enterprise. See Manage Roles.
- The target application instance is deployed and running on a node.
- The hosting node is running EVE-OS (Edge Virtualization Engine) version 10.8.0 or later.
- The application uses ext4 or ZFS-based volumes. Container volumes and CSI volumes are not supported.
- At least 20% of the node’s persist partition is free.
Create a Snapshot
You can create a snapshot directly from the Actions menu, or during a Purge & Update operation.Create a snapshot from the Actions menu
Use this approach when you want to take a snapshot without running an update.- Navigate to Infrastructure > Workloads > Applications.
- Click the application instance name to open its detail page.
- Click the three-dot Actions menu in the upper right.
- Select Create Snapshot.
- Confirm the action in the dialog.
Create a snapshot during Purge & Update
Use this approach to create a rollback point before a destructive update operation.- Navigate to Infrastructure > Workloads > Applications.
- Click the application instance name to open its detail page.
- Click the three-dot Actions menu.
- Select Purge & Update.
- In the confirmation dialog, check Create a snapshot before purging.
- Click Purge & Update to confirm.
View Snapshots
- Navigate to Infrastructure > Workloads > Applications and open the application instance.
- Click the Storage tab.
- Scroll to the snapshots section. The list shows each snapshot’s name, creation date, and current status.
Roll Back to a Snapshot
Rolling back reverts the application to its state at the time the snapshot was taken, including both configuration and volume data. Before rolling back:- Back up any data that was written after the snapshot was taken. The rollback replaces current data with the snapshot’s data and you cannot reverse this change.
- Each snapshot can only be used for rollback once. After rollback, the snapshot cannot be reused.
- Navigate to Infrastructure > Workloads > Applications and open the application instance.
- Click the Storage tab.
- Locate the snapshot in the snapshots list.
- Click the Rollback (history) icon in the Actions column.
- Review the warning and click Rollback to confirm.
Verify the rollback
After the rollback completes:- Confirm the snapshot status in the Storage tab shows Active. The rollback button becomes inactive after a single use.
- Confirm the application status shows Online on the Overview tab.
- Test the application to confirm it is working as expected at the prior version.
Troubleshoot rollback failures
- “Resource not available” error: A hardware resource required by the snapshot (such as a network interface) is no longer available on the node. Check whether interfaces or IO adapters have been removed or reassigned.
- Application does not start: Review the application logs in Infrastructure > Monitor > Logs, check that the node has sufficient resources, and confirm no conflicting applications are using the same interfaces or volumes.
- Rollback takes longer than expected: Large volumes (over 200 GB) may take several minutes. Monitor the snapshot status in the Storage tab.
Delete a Snapshot
Delete a snapshot when you are confident the application is stable and no longer need the rollback capability.- Navigate to Infrastructure > Workloads > Applications and open the application instance.
- Click the Storage tab.
- Locate the snapshot in the snapshots list.
- Click the Delete (trash) icon in the Actions column.
- Confirm the deletion.
Verify storage recovery
- Open the node detail page from Infrastructure > Fleet > Nodes.
- Click the Storage tab.
- Confirm available storage on the persist partition has increased after the next application deactivation.
- Non-purgeable volumes: typically 10–50% of volume size, depending on changes since the snapshot.
- Purgeable volumes: up to 100% of the volume size.
