An edge app in My Library is the reusable definition that you deploy as application instances. This page covers the actions available on an edge app after you create or import it.

Prerequisites

Open the Edge App Detail Page

  1. In the sidebar, select Marketplace.
  2. Select My Library.
  3. Select the Edge Apps filter tab.
  4. Select the edge app card.
The detail page header shows the app title, type, and the action buttons described on this page. The image panel beside the header shows the app icon. The tabs show the app definition:

Change the app icon

Hover over the image panel and select Upload icon or Change icon, or drag a PNG or JPEG file onto the panel. The console confirms with App icon updated. To remove a custom icon, hover over the panel and select Delete icon. The console confirms with App icon removed. The icon is stored in the app manifest, so it travels with the app when you export the manifest or duplicate the app.

Edit an Edge App

  1. Open the edge app detail page.
  2. Select the Configure edge app (gear) button in the header.
  3. In the editor, select a section in the left sidebar and change the fields. The sections depend on the app type:
  4. Select Save Changes.
The console confirms with Edge app updated. Keep the following in mind:
  • You cannot change the Name. It is shown in the editor header for reference. To rename an app, duplicate it under a new name and delete the original.
  • You can change the CPU placement policy in Hardware > Resources for Virtual Machine and Container apps. The change applies to new instances only. See CPU Placement for Application Instances.
  • The Description must be 256 characters or fewer.
  • Node port and app port values in inbound rules must be in the range 1 to 65535.
  • If the edge app was imported from a parent enterprise, the gear button is disabled and the console shows the message This record is not editable as it has been imported from a parent enterprise. Contact your administrator to change it.
Edits to the edge app change the definition in your library. They do not change application instances that were already deployed from it. To apply a changed definition to a running instance, see Manage an Application Instance.

Update an Edge App From the Catalog

If you imported the edge app from the Marketplace catalog and the publisher has released a newer version, the detail page shows the banner An update is available for this edge app in the marketplace.
  1. Select Update in the banner.
  2. Wait for the import job to finish. The console confirms with Update started for this edge app.
The update re-imports the app from the catalog over your existing copy and keeps the same name. Follow the job on the Jobs page.

Duplicate an Edge App

Duplicate an edge app when you want a variant of an existing definition, for example a second sizing profile or a copy to rename.
  1. Open the edge app detail page.
  2. Select the Duplicate edge app button in the header. You can also select Duplicate from the card actions in My Library.
  3. In the Duplicate Edge App dialog, enter a New name. The name must be unique in your enterprise.
  4. Select one of the following:
    • Duplicate creates an untouched copy with the new name, including the manifest, drives, interfaces, and configuration. The console confirms with Duplicated as "<name>".
    • Duplicate & Configure opens the New Edge App wizard pre-filled with the existing settings and the new name, so that you can adjust any step before you create the copy.

Export the Manifest

Export a manifest when you want to version an edge app definition outside the console, share it with another enterprise, or use it as the starting point for a manifest import.
  1. Open the edge app detail page.
  2. Select Export manifest in the header to download the full definition as a JSON file. The console confirms with Manifest exported.
  3. If the app defines a custom configuration, you can instead select Export custom configuration to download only the configuration template and its variables. The console confirms with Custom configuration exported.
To import a manifest, see Import Edge Applications.

Deploy From the Detail Page

Select Deploy as application in the header to open the application instance wizard with this edge app selected. See Deploy an Application Instance.

Delete an Edge App

Deleting an edge app also deletes every application instance that was deployed from it. The instances stop on their nodes and their data is not recoverable. Check the Overview tab for the instance count before you delete.
  1. Open the edge app detail page.
  2. Select the Delete (trash) button in the header.
  3. Review the Delete Edge App dialog. If application instances exist, the dialog states the count, for example This app has 3 active instances, and warns that deleting will remove all of them.
  4. Select Delete.
The console deletes the application instances first and then the edge app. It confirms with Deleted edge app: <title> and returns to My Library. You can also select Delete from the card actions in My Library. That dialog asks you to confirm but does not show the instance count, so check the detail page first if you are not sure whether the app is deployed. If you want to keep the running instances, do not delete the edge app. Deployed instances continue to reference their edge app for updates and redeployment.

Verify the Result

  • After an edit, reopen the detail page and confirm the changed values on the relevant tab.
  • After a duplicate, the copy appears in My Library under the Edge Apps filter tab with the new name.
  • After a delete, the app no longer appears in My Library, and its former instances no longer appear in Infrastructure > Workloads > Applications.
