# Deploy Applications to EVE-OS VMs on Apple M1

> Application type compatibility notes for EVE-OS running as a virtual machine on Apple M1 hardware through UTM.

EVE-OS can run as a virtual machine on Apple M1 hardware using UTM. This configuration is useful for testing EVE-OS deployments on Apple Silicon development machines. However, Apple Silicon hardware restrictions affect which edge application types you can deploy inside the EVE-OS guest.

## Application Type Support

Apple Silicon does not expose the hardware virtualization CPU flag to guest virtual machines. As a result, nested virtualization is not available inside an EVE-OS VM running on an Apple M1 device.

| Application type | Support on Apple M1 EVE-OS VM |
| - | - |
| Edge containers | Supported. Containers deploy and run as expected. |
| Virtual machine apps | Not supported. Apple Silicon prevents nested hardware virtualization in guest VMs. |

When you attempt to deploy a VM edge application to an EVE-OS guest running on Apple M1 hardware, the deployment fails with an error indicating that virtualization is unavailable, similar to the following status alert:

`failed to run domain <addea123-1234-123aa-...>: not based on an OCI image`

Container workloads are not affected by this restriction and run normally.

## Validated Test Environment

This compatibility behavior was validated in the following environment:

* macOS Monterey 12.6
* MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2021) with Apple M1
* UTM 4.0.7 (66)
* EVE-OS 8.12.0 ARM64
