# Set Log Levels

> Control the verbosity of application and system logs on nodes managed by Edge Infrastructure Services.

## Introduction

Log level settings control how much detail EVE-OS (Edge Virtualization Engine) and your edge applications write to their log output. Increasing the log level produces more diagnostic detail at the cost of higher log volume. Decreasing it reduces noise in production environments.

Edge Infrastructure Services provides two ways to control log levels:

* **Application log levels**: set via environment variables in the edge application's configuration. This method controls the logging behavior of the application itself, not of EVE-OS.
* **EVE-OS log levels**: set via EVE-OS configuration items through ZCLI. This method controls the verbosity of the EVE-OS system logs forwarded to Edge Infrastructure Services.

### Prerequisites

* You have the SysManager or SysAdmin role in your enterprise. See [Manage Roles](https://zededa.mintlify.site/new-ui/infrastructure-services/administration/manage-roles.md).
* For application log levels: an edge application definition in the Marketplace.
* For EVE-OS log levels: ZCLI installed and authenticated. See [Get Started With ZCLI](https://zededa.mintlify.site/zcli-reference/get-started.md) for setup instructions.

## Set Log Levels for an Application

An environment variable that the application reads at startup typically controls the log level. The variable name depends on the application (common examples include `LOG_LEVEL`, `DEBUG`, `LOGLEVEL`, and `RUST_LOG`), so check your application's documentation.

To set a log level environment variable on an edge application:

1. In the sidebar, click **Marketplace > My Library**.
2. Click the name of the edge application you want to configure, then click **Edit**.
3. In the edit wizard, advance to the **App Configuration** step.
4. In the **Environment Variables** section, add a new variable:
   * **Key**: the environment variable name your application expects (for example, `LOG_LEVEL`).
   * **Value**: the log level value (for example, `debug`, `info`, `warn`, or `error`).
5. Complete the wizard and save the application definition.
6. Redeploy or update the application instances to apply the new environment variable.

After the instance restarts, the application reads the new log level at startup. To view the resulting output, go to **Infrastructure > Monitor > Logs** and select the application instance.

## Set EVE-OS System Log Levels

EVE-OS exposes log level configuration through ZCLI configuration items. These items control the verbosity of EVE-OS system messages forwarded to Edge Infrastructure Services.

To increase EVE-OS log verbosity for a specific node:

```text theme={"dark"}
zcli edge-node update <EDGE_NODE_NAME> --config=log.global.level:debug
```

To restore the default log level:

```text theme={"dark"}
zcli edge-node update <EDGE_NODE_NAME> --config=log.global.level:info
```

Valid values for `log.global.level` are `debug`, `info`, `warn`, and `error`. The default level is `info`.

To verify the current log level configuration on a node:

```text theme={"dark"}
zcli edge-node show <EDGE_NODE_NAME>
```

Review the configuration items in the output to confirm the setting was applied.

## View Logs after Changing the Level

After applying a log level change:

1. In the sidebar, click **Infrastructure > Monitor > Logs**.
2. Select the application instance or review the Events page for EVE-OS system messages.
3. Adjust the time range to capture output after the change took effect.

Allow a few minutes for EVE-OS to pick up the ZCLI configuration change and for the node to report updated logs.
