> Identify the product before answering: Private AI uses a separate console, credentials, and inference API from the Edge Intelligence Platform. Do not apply instructions from one product to the other.
> Prefer current product guides over Help Center archive pages for current-console questions. Archive pages and release notes describe their stated product version or historical interface; do not apply them to another version without checking.

# Identify and Configure a WWAN Modem for PCI Passthrough

> Identify a WWAN modem on a node and configure it for PCI passthrough (App Direct) so a single application owns the hardware directly.

# Identify and Configure a WWAN Modem for PCI Passthrough

App Direct (PCI passthrough) assigns a WWAN modem adapter exclusively to a single application. The application owns the hardware directly, and the modem is not shared with EVE-OS (Edge Virtualization Engine) or other applications. Use this configuration when an application requires direct, low-latency access to a cellular modem without going through the EVE-OS network stack.

## Prerequisites

* The node is onboarded and has Online status.
* A WWAN modem is physically present on the node and detected by EVE-OS.
* The target application is designed to control a cellular modem directly.

## Identify the WWAN Modem on a Node

1. In the sidebar, select **Infrastructure > Fleet > Nodes**.
2. Select the node name to open the node detail page.
3. Select the **Adapters** tab.
4. Locate the adapter with type **WWAN** in the Network Adapters list.

The adapter row shows the modem's current Interface Usage, physical label, logical label, and connection status. If EVE-OS has reported modem information, a **Modem** section displays the Manufacturer, Model, Firmware version, IMEI, and Control Protocol.

## Configure the Adapter for App Direct (PCI Passthrough)

1. On the **Adapters** tab, locate the WWAN adapter.
2. In the **Usage** column, select the current value to open the Interface Usage dropdown.
3. Select **App Direct**.
4. Select **Save** to apply the configuration.

The adapter is now reserved for a single application. EVE-OS will not use it for management or shared network traffic.

### Interface Usage options

| Option | Description |
| - | - |
| **Management** | Carries control-plane traffic to Edge Infrastructure Services. Also available to applications and virtual networks. |
| **App Shared** | Usable by multiple applications and virtual networks. Not for management. |
| **App Direct** | Handed exclusively to a single application for direct hardware access (PCI passthrough). |
| **VLANs Only** | The port carries only tagged VLAN sub-interfaces. Takes no IP address. |
| **Disabled** | Administratively blocked. |

## Assign the Adapter to an Application

After setting a WWAN adapter to App Direct, it becomes available as a direct-attach option when deploying an application instance. During application instance deployment, select the adapter by its logical label in the I/O adapter assignment step.

**Note:** An adapter set to App Direct cannot be used as a VLAN parent. Only Management, App Shared, and VLANs Only adapters are valid VLAN parent interfaces.

## Add WWAN to a Hardware Model

To include WWAN adapters in a hardware model definition (for documentation and onboarding use), add a WWAN I/O member to the model. See [Hardware Models](https://zededa.mintlify.site/new-ui/marketplace/hardware-models.md) and set the **Type** to `WWAN` when adding the I/O member.
