# Configure the OpenTelemetry Integration

> Connect Edge Infrastructure Services to an OpenTelemetry collector and configure data streams to export application logs, events, and metrics.

The OpenTelemetry integration connects Edge Infrastructure Services to an OpenTelemetry (OTLP/gRPC) collector endpoint. After you set up the integration, you create data streams to control which platform data flows to the collector: application logs, events, or metrics. You can pause and re-enable each data stream without deleting the configuration.

## Introduction

This procedure covers how to add an OpenTelemetry integration, create one or more data streams to forward platform data, and optionally control metric streaming at the project level. Use this integration when you want to centralize edge infrastructure observability data in your existing monitoring or alerting platform without relying on API polling.

## Prerequisites

* You have the SysAdmin role in your enterprise. See [Manage Roles](https://zededa.mintlify.site/new-ui/infrastructure-services/administration/manage-roles.md).
* An OpenTelemetry collector endpoint is running and reachable from Edge Infrastructure Services, with a bearer token available for authentication.

## Add the OpenTelemetry Integration

1. In the header, select your profile avatar, then select **Enterprise**.

2. In the Enterprise Settings navigation, select **Integrations**.

3. Select **Add Integration**.

4. In the **Name** field, enter a descriptive name for this integration.

5. In the **Integration Category** dropdown, select **Data**.

6. In the **Integration Type** dropdown, select **OpenTelemetry**.

7. Complete the connection fields:

   | Field | Required | Description |
   | - | - | - |
   | Bearer Token | Yes | The authentication token for your OpenTelemetry collector, in the format `Bearer <your-token>`. |
   | Skip Verify | No | When selected, Edge Infrastructure Services skips TLS certificate verification. Use only in non-production or testing environments where the collector uses a self-signed certificate. |
   | Enable TLS | No | When selected, Edge Infrastructure Services encrypts communication with the collector using TLS. Recommended for production deployments. |
   | Host | Yes | The hostname or IP address of your OpenTelemetry collector, for example `otel-collector.example.com`. |
   | Port | Yes | The port your collector listens on. The default OTLP/gRPC port is `4317`. |

8. Select **Add Integration**.

The integration appears in the Integrations list. You can now create data streams to begin forwarding data.

## Create a Data Stream

A data stream links a data source type to the OpenTelemetry integration. Each stream forwards one type of platform data. You can create multiple streams to forward different data types to the same integration.

1. In the Enterprise Settings navigation, select **Data Streams**.

2. Select **Create Stream**.

3. Complete the following fields:

   | Field | Required | Description |
   | - | - | - |
   | Name | Yes | A descriptive name for this data stream, for example `edge-metrics`. |
   | Data Source Type | Yes | The type of platform data to forward: **Application Logs**, **Events**, or **Metrics**. |
   | Linked Integration | No | Select the OpenTelemetry integration you created. If no integration is linked, the stream remains inactive. |
   | Enabled | No | Toggle on to activate the stream immediately after saving. |

4. Select **Create Stream**.

Edge Infrastructure Services begins forwarding the selected data type to your OpenTelemetry collector.

## Control Metric Streaming at the Project Level

Each project includes a **Suppress Streaming Telemetry** setting that controls whether nodes in that project stream device metrics (CPU, memory, storage, network, and other telemetry) to configured integrations. When the toggle is on, nodes in that project stream metrics. When the toggle is off, nodes in that project do not stream metrics, regardless of any configured data streams.

To adjust this setting for an existing project:

1. Navigate to the project's settings.
2. Locate the **Suppress Streaming Telemetry** toggle.
3. Toggle it on to enable metric streaming, or off to stop nodes in this project from streaming metrics.

## Manage the Integration

### Pause a data stream

To temporarily stop forwarding data without deleting the stream, navigate to **Data Streams** and toggle the stream off. Toggle it on again to resume.

### Remove an integration

To remove the integration, select the delete button on the integration row in the **Integrations** list. Remove or re-link any data streams that reference this integration before deleting it to avoid orphaned streams.
