# Add a rootfs EVE-OS Image to Your Enterprise

> How to get an EVE-OS rootfs image and add it to your enterprise by uploading from a local machine or uplinking from an existing datastore, using ZCLI.

## Introduction

Adding an EVE-OS rootfs image to your enterprise makes that image version available for deploying to nodes. There are two methods: **uploading**, which copies an image from your local machine into a ZEDEDA-managed datastore, and **uplinking**, which registers an image that is already stored in a datastore by pointing Edge Infrastructure Services to its location and metadata.

Both methods use ZCLI. GUI-based uploads are not currently supported.

**Uploading** is supported only for ZEDEDA-managed datastores and is provided as a convenience for onboarding. Do not use ZEDEDA-managed datastores in production environments.

**Uplinking** works with any datastore. Use this method for production environments.

## Prerequisites

* ZCLI running. See [Get Started With ZCLI](https://zededa.mintlify.site/zcli-reference/get-started.md) for authentication steps.
* Docker installed on your local machine.
* A datastore in your enterprise (ZEDEDA-managed or your own). See [Create a Datastore](https://zededa.mintlify.site/new-ui/infrastructure-services/datastores/create-a-datastore.md) for setup instructions.

## Get a rootfs EVE-OS Image

You must use a rootfs image (not an installer image) for uploading and uplinking. Use `docker` to pull and generate the image.

1. Choose the EVE-OS version you want to add. For a list of current LTS versions, see the [LTS Policy](https://zededa.mintlify.site/new-ui/infrastructure-services/eve-os/lts-policy.md).

2. Navigate to your preferred working directory. The rootfs image file is saved here.

3. Get the full version name to confirm the exact version string.

```text theme={"dark"}
docker run lfedge/eve:EVE_VERSION version
```

For example:

```text theme={"dark"}
docker run lfedge/eve:14.5-stable-amd64 version
```

The output looks like:

```text theme={"dark"}
0.0.0-14.5-stable-29901325-kvm-amd64
```

4. Pull and generate the rootfs image. Replace `EVE_VERSION` with your target version string and `IMAGE_FILE_NAME` with your preferred filename.

```text theme={"dark"}
docker run --rm lfedge/eve:EVE_VERSION rootfs > IMAGE_FILE_NAME.img
```

For example:

```text theme={"dark"}
docker run --rm lfedge/eve:11.0.5-lts-kvm-amd64 rootfs > 11.0.5-lts-kvm-amd64-rootfs.img
```

## Upload a rootfs EVE-OS Image

Use this method to copy an image from your local machine to a ZEDEDA-managed datastore.

1. Log in to ZCLI. See [Get Started With ZCLI](https://zededa.mintlify.site/zcli-reference/get-started.md) for authentication steps.

2. Create an EVE-OS image entry in your enterprise. The `IMAGE_NAME` value must exactly match the version string you specified when generating the image (for example, `11.0.5-lts-kvm-amd64`). The image format for rootfs images must be `RAW`.

```text theme={"dark"}
zcli image create IMAGE_NAME --arch=AMD64_OR_ARM64 --datastore-name=DATASTORE_NAME --type=Eve --image-format=RAW --title=IMAGE_NAME
```

For example:

```text theme={"dark"}
zcli image create 11.0.5-lts-kvm-amd64 --arch=AMD64 --datastore-name=Zededa-AWS-Image --type=Eve --image-format=RAW --title=11.0.5-lts-kvm-amd64
```

3. Upload the rootfs image.

```text theme={"dark"}
zcli image upload IMAGE_NAME --chunked --path=PATH/TO/IMAGE_NAME
```

For example:

```text theme={"dark"}
zcli image upload 11.0.5-lts-kvm-amd64 --chunked --path=./11.0.5-lts-kvm-amd64-rootfs.img
```

4. Verify the image entry. Look for `Status: Ready` in the output.

```text theme={"dark"}
zcli image show IMAGE_NAME
```

For example:

```text theme={"dark"}
zcli image show 11.0.5-lts-kvm-amd64
```

## Uplink a rootfs EVE-OS Image

Use this method to register an image that is already stored in a datastore by associating its metadata with your enterprise.

1. Log in to ZCLI. See [Get Started With ZCLI](https://zededa.mintlify.site/zcli-reference/get-started.md) for authentication steps.

2. Create an EVE-OS image entry in your enterprise. The image format must be `RAW`.

```text theme={"dark"}
zcli image create IMAGE_NAME --arch=AMD64_OR_ARM64 --datastore-name=DATASTORE_NAME --type=Eve --image-format=RAW --title=IMAGE_NAME
```

For example:

```text theme={"dark"}
zcli image create 11.0.5-lts-kvm-amd64 --arch=AMD64 --datastore-name=Zededa-AWS-Image --type=Eve --image-format=RAW --title=11.0.5-lts-kvm-amd64
```

3. Get the SHA-256 hash and size of your image file. Run the following commands in the directory where the image is stored.

On macOS/Linux:

```text theme={"dark"}
shasum -a 256 11.0.5-lts-kvm-amd64.img
stat -f %z 11.0.5-lts-kvm-amd64.img
```

4. Uplink the image using the SHA-256 hash and size values from the previous step.

```text theme={"dark"}
zcli image uplink IMAGE_NAME --datastore-name=DATASTORE_NAME --image-sha=SHA_256_VALUE --image-size=IMAGE_SIZE_IN_BYTES
```

For example:

```text theme={"dark"}
zcli image uplink 11.0.5-lts-kvm-amd64 --datastore-name=Zededa-AWS-Image --image-sha=629595dda5afec054c5d5fad485da3e6068994a7001534a4eaee5170696aa8f4 --image-size=232476160
```

5. Verify the image entry. Look for `Status: Ready` in the output.

```text theme={"dark"}
zcli image show IMAGE_NAME
```
