# Manage Application Snapshots

> Create, view, roll back, and delete application instance snapshots in Edge Infrastructure Services.

## Introduction

This procedure explains how to create application snapshots, roll back to a previous snapshot, and delete snapshots that are no longer needed.

For background on how snapshots work, see [Application Snapshot Overview](https://zededa.mintlify.site/new-ui/infrastructure-services/applications/application-snapshots.md).

### Prerequisites

* You have the SysManager or SysAdmin role in your enterprise. See [Manage Roles](https://zededa.mintlify.site/new-ui/infrastructure-services/administration/manage-roles.md).
* The target application instance is deployed and running on a node.
* The hosting node is running EVE-OS (Edge Virtualization Engine) version 10.8.0 or later.
* The application uses ext4 or ZFS-based volumes. Container volumes and CSI volumes are not supported.
* At least 20% of the node's persist partition is free.

## Create a Snapshot

You can create a snapshot directly from the Actions menu, or during a Purge & Update operation.

### Create a snapshot from the Actions menu

Use this approach when you want to take a snapshot without running an update.

1. Navigate to **Infrastructure > Workloads > Applications**.
2. Click the application instance name to open its detail page.
3. Click the three-dot **Actions** menu in the upper right.
4. Select **Create Snapshot**.
5. Confirm the action in the dialog.

The snapshot appears in the **Storage** tab under the snapshots list with a status of **Creating**. After EVE-OS captures the configuration and volume data, the status changes to **Idle**.

### Create a snapshot during Purge & Update

Use this approach to create a rollback point before a destructive update operation.

1. Navigate to **Infrastructure > Workloads > Applications**.
2. Click the application instance name to open its detail page.
3. Click the three-dot **Actions** menu.
4. Select **Purge & Update**.
5. In the confirmation dialog, check **Create a snapshot before purging**.
6. Click **Purge & Update** to confirm.

The platform creates the snapshot, then proceeds with the purge and update. The application restarts briefly during this process.

## View Snapshots

1. Navigate to **Infrastructure > Workloads > Applications** and open the application instance.
2. Click the **Storage** tab.
3. Scroll to the snapshots section. The list shows each snapshot's name, creation date, and current status.

A snapshot can briefly show a status of **Loading** with a blank creation date while Edge Infrastructure Services retrieves its current state. The list refreshes automatically, and the actual status and creation date appear when the state is returned. For the full list of statuses, see [Application Snapshot Overview](https://zededa.mintlify.site/new-ui/infrastructure-services/applications/application-snapshots.md).

Only one snapshot is retained per application instance. If you create a new snapshot while one already exists, the older snapshot is automatically replaced.

## Roll Back to a Snapshot

Rolling back reverts the application to its state at the time the snapshot was taken, including both configuration and volume data.

Before rolling back:

* Back up any data that was written after the snapshot was taken. The rollback replaces current data with the snapshot's data and you cannot reverse this change.
* Each snapshot can only be used for rollback once. After rollback, the snapshot cannot be reused.

1. Navigate to **Infrastructure > Workloads > Applications** and open the application instance.
2. Click the **Storage** tab.
3. Locate the snapshot in the snapshots list.
4. Click the **Rollback** (history) icon in the Actions column.
5. Review the warning and click **Rollback** to confirm.

EVE-OS stops the application, restores volume data from the snapshot, reapplies the saved configuration, and restarts the application. The application goes offline during this process. Rollback time depends on the size of the attached volumes.

### Verify the rollback

After the rollback completes:

1. Confirm the snapshot status in the **Storage** tab shows **Active**. The rollback button becomes inactive after a single use.
2. Confirm the application status shows **Online** on the **Overview** tab.
3. Test the application to confirm it is working as expected at the prior version.

### Troubleshoot rollback failures

* **"Resource not available" error**: A hardware resource required by the snapshot (such as a network interface) is no longer available on the node. Check whether interfaces or IO adapters have been removed or reassigned.
* **Application does not start**: Review the application logs in **Infrastructure > Monitor > Logs**, check that the node has sufficient resources, and confirm no conflicting applications are using the same interfaces or volumes.
* **Rollback takes longer than expected**: Large volumes (over 200 GB) may take several minutes. Monitor the snapshot status in the **Storage** tab.

## Delete a Snapshot

Delete a snapshot when you are confident the application is stable and no longer need the rollback capability.

1. Navigate to **Infrastructure > Workloads > Applications** and open the application instance.
2. Click the **Storage** tab.
3. Locate the snapshot in the snapshots list.
4. Click the **Delete** (trash) icon in the Actions column.
5. Confirm the deletion.

The snapshot is removed from the list immediately. The snapshot files on the node's drives are deleted during the next application deactivation (update, restart, or purge). To free storage right away, restart the application instance after deleting the snapshot.

### Verify storage recovery

1. Open the node detail page from **Infrastructure > Fleet > Nodes**.
2. Click the **Storage** tab.
3. Confirm available storage on the persist partition has increased after the next application deactivation.

Expected storage recovery varies by volume type:

* Non-purgeable volumes: typically 10–50% of volume size, depending on changes since the snapshot.
* Purgeable volumes: up to 100% of the volume size.
